Friday Favorite: Snow Dayyyyysss

We enjoyed an early week treat Tuesday  snow!  I was so excited about the snow, I always am.  But I was soooo excited to play with Dutch in the snow.

This is kind of how Dutch felt about the snow.

Not really, he just didn't like the layers of clothes he had to wear.

This snow was a lot different from our other snows.  First it iced all day Tuesday and finally started to snow around 4.  When we went outside to play it was so cold.  Like 12* cold.  In true red neck fashion we fixed up a sled for our boy, along with sock gloves to match his other snow attire.
When it got up to 20* we spent a little time outside but the snow wouldn't even pack to make a snow ball.  We ended up with a pretty good amount of ice and not as much snow.  Since it was in the 20's the city was shut down for the past several days.  Can you say cabin fever?!

Snow days are a lot different with a baby.  Before I would have deep cleaned the house or sewed or cooked a lot while off for a snow day.  Instead there was a lot of playing inside and a few naps.  Check out Claire, she has such a hard life.

Even with the cold temps and lack of productivity snow 2014 was a success because I did manage to make a few treats and we may have consumed a whole batch of brownies on Tuesday.  Today it was back to work and daycare for everyone.  Dutch was so happy to see all of his buddies!

In Auburn we were prepared for the ice but not everyone was so lucky.  Birmingham was slammed and we know several people that were stranded and had to spend the night with strangers.  Strangers, I am so intrigued.  They had to abandon their cars on the highway and walk to shelter.  In their dress clothes, some with babies in tow.  I can't imagine.  Thankful we didn't have that problem, but I am working on an emergency kit for the car.  Anyway check out this video of a girl ice skating on the streets in B'ham.  I have laughed a million times thinking about ice skating down a street in Alabama!

Weekly Favorite: Wet Brush

This week for my weekly favorite I am going to share about the Wet Brush

My sister in law gave me one at Christmas and I have really loved using it.  It is especially good for getting tangles out without pain or tears.  Since about 3 months after having Dutch I have been losing hair like crazy and I love this thing because it gets all of my lose hair out.  Luckily the shedding has slowed down a bit, starting to wonder about going bald there for a few months.
I've seen them at Sally Beauty Supply and they are all over Amazon.

Have a good weekend friends.  I think it is going to get up to 50* here so I may be busting out the bikini and washing my car.  Ok maybe not but my blood is not made for this weather.  Stay warm!

Favorite This Week: Daily Journal

With inspiration from Chris at Red Gate Farm, I've decided to do a weekly favorite.  The plan is to do a short post on something that I've really liked that week.  Hopefully it will help me get back to blogging, learning how to use my camera again and maybe you will even get a few ideas!

First up for this week I wanted to share my daily journal the One Line a Day: A Five-Year Memory Book.

I heard about this simple journal a few years ago and made sure that I had one ready to go when Dutch was born.  I've been writing a few memories or special moments from our day since he was born.  Sometimes I don't have time to write for that day (hello baby that wants to be attached to someone 24/7) and if I forget what happened that day I write something that he has been doing that I love or what makes him laugh, etc.

Along that same line I also have a journal for Dutch.  I bought it the night after I found out I was pregnant with him.  I had intended to record my pregnancy and beyond in it -milestones, funny sayings, my feelings for him. But I haven't written in it yet.  I have a lot of those things written out on notebook paper and stuck inside. I am really big on chronological order and I think that is what is holding me back. I already regret some of the lost time that I haven't recorded.  Gotta get on that soon.

Anyway got off track there.  I think the One Line a Day would make a great gift.  Perfect for a new mom or even someone getting married.  I would love to go back and read what Eric and I were up to back in the day.
Another good simple daily journal: Q&A a Day for Kids: A Three Year Journal.  Have a great weekend friends!

What A Difference A Year Makes

1 year ago today this happened.

Today this happened.

One year ago today we found out that we were having a boy.  Then we kept it a secret for 3 weeks.  It was fun keeping that little secret.
I am still in awe that Dutch belongs to me and that this kid was once inside me.  He is now 6 months old and 20 pounds of sugar - unless is is 11pm-6am. ha.

Dutch's 4 month photos

I'm way behind on this post but wanted it to be here on the blog.
In November we had Dutch's next set of photos made and a few family shots.  Instead of 3 month photos, our photographer likes to wait until babies are pushing up on their elbows and holding up their heads good for photos.  This for Dutch happened right at 4 months.  This baby has changed so much in the 2 months since these were taken.  I use to think his thighs were chunky then but now they are so much fatter and I didn't realize how much hair he has now.  Plus duh he grows cuter every day!

This also happened to be Eric's 38th birthday so I was happy to get this sweet photo.

I think this is my favorite photo from the shoot.  Claire is like I know you aren't in my family photos and Dutch is looking at her the same way.  ha.  Actually we have been really blessed and they are great friends.

Save For A Year Update

Last January I posted this blog:

A few days ago on facebook I saw a handy little savings chart where you save the dollar amount for whatever week of the year it is.  The photo was hard to read so I retyped one for myself printed it out for the fridge, and then shrunk it down in excel to keep in my wallet.

I thought it was a neat concept and an easy way to save for something extra or if you are on a tight budget a great way to get started saving money. I really love to save money but have a hard time spending what I save so I think this will help me out.

Since most of us don't have an extra $200 laying around in December I switched the challenge and started from week 52 to make it easier.  What is something you would save up for.  Me?  A vacation of course!

********************
A year later I'm happy to report that I followed through and saved the money!  I can think of a few people that made fun of me (ERIC I'm looking at you), that now wish they had a fat wad of cash.

Like I stated I started backwards but if you don't have $52 to save right now then pick a week and save that much.  Just mark off the week to remember which ones you have saved.
After I hit the $20 week, I just saved $20 a week.  It was just easier to keep up with.

My goal was to do something fun with the money.  We were planning on a trip to NYC this past December and found a great deal on airfare.  But then reality hit and I realized that I would have to nurse Dutch or pump the whole trip. That pretty much took the excitement out of a trip where you are constantly doing something besides sitting down.  So instead of a trip, we were able to make Christmas better for a few families and I gave Dutch's daycare teachers a nice gift since they are so great.  Even after that I still have a nice amount left over so I guess it will just get added to the kitty.

Did you do this plan last year or have plans to start this year?  I'm going to do it all again- hopefully I will have pictures from a great vacation to post next January :)  Or maybe I will just hire a sleep trainer for Dutch...
