Copper: Seven Years

Yesterday Eric and I celebrated our 7th wedding anniversary! We go with traditional wedding gifts and 7th is copper. Eric had this sweet copper bracelet waiting on me when I woke up.

I wanted to spring for some copper gutters for him (cough) but had to go with some copper yard art instead. If money was growing on that tree in the backyard and I had a new house I would have my eye on these pretties...

A little out of your anniversary gift price range too?  I am fond of these sweet tokens of affection also

Do y'all go with traditional/modern gift suggestions?  10th anniversary traditional gift is tin/aluminum.  I think we will go for the Modern gift suggestion: diamonds. Better start saving now.

Target Outdoor Clearance

Yesterday I heard that Target's outdoor section went to 70% off so I had to go check it out.  Not everything was 70%, but most of the furniture was.

I bought 2 of these little aluminum side tables for $10 each.  Spray paint them a fun color?  Or you could put 2 together, make a slip cover and use as a coffee table.

They had this 6x9 rug for only $10.  Why yes it pretty much looks like a walk off mat, but you could easily paint some design on it.  They also had grey and black.  It is already ribbed so painting fat stripes would be so simple!  Some of their cute outdoor rugs were marked down 5x7 for $40.
The simple Smithwick loveseat was only $68 bones.

Smith and Hawken San Rafel Metal dining table was only $128 and 4 chairs were $132, 2 swivel chairs were $85 =$345.00.  Regular price for just the table is $424!!

I am getting way too excited over this, I better stop typing and bring myself down for a minute before I go buy a lot of patio furniture for my imaginary patio.  But not before I tell you that they had a lot of cute cardigans for $6!!  And bedding 70% off.  I got a king bed skirt for $12!!
ok I'm done now.

I've got a quick question.  Last night I was reading my new Southern Living and it always drives me crazy because they act like Maryland is in the south.  Does anyone else notice that?  If you are from Maryland do you think you are from the south?  If you do I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings.

And one more.  With all the talk of the heat wave in the northern states, our weathermen point out that a lot of y'all don't have air conditioners up there.  Is that true, do you not have an air conditioner at your house?

Ok last one.  If you live somewhere like Michigan or North Dakota and go swimming in a lake or pool is it not really cold water?  Do you just swim in cold water anyway or not swim at all?  I like the water around 88*.

30th Birthday Party

This post is kind of all over the place, sorry.  So many details I want to remember.
So a couple of weekends ago I had my 30th birthday party.  It was a pretty last minute event.  You see I have high expectations of most things and if they don't go just like I imagined it usually ruins the whole memory for me.  I was afraid of that happening to my 30th birthday party.  But my friends talked me into going through with the party and I am happy they did!  Since I waited until the week before to throw everything together I sent out e-vites.  I made mine on PaperlessPost.com.

Eric worked so hard all week helping me get things ready.  He even surprised me by painting a big "30" for me in the backyard!

It started raining during that photo.  I was bummed because we had planned an outdoor party.  Our yard looked great and Eric worked hard stringing Christmas lights around the trees.  I was imagining one of those picture perfect summer night parties.  I still got that just indoors.  For a few seconds it stopped raining, we moved the dj outside and I set up one of the tables.  Then it started to rain again, back inside we went.

One of the reasons we planned for an outdoor party was the fact that we had 26 people coming and there was no way we all could have fit into my house.  My living room is 13x13, dining room 12x10 and kitchen about 4x10. ha!
With a realistic look at the radar we decided to move everything inside about 30 minutes before the party started.  Our sofa and chair were moved into the breezeway and everything else was piled in the bedrooms.  My tables with vintage sheets and hydrangeas would have looked so adorable outside but they worked just fine in my living room.
We could only fit 2 tables in the living room so everyone else hung out in the kitchen or during the rain breaks the guys were outside. See Claire on the couch in the breezeway, she was so confused.

For decoration I made accordion flowers for the brick wall in the backyard to put behind the dj.  The photo collages were going to cover up a window.  They worked perfect in the dining room to cover up the nail holes from the plates I took down so they wouldn't get knocked off the wall.  We were in such a hurry I slapped them up with packing tape and then went back over that with japanese masking tape so they wouldn't look too junky.  I think it turned out pretty cute for our last second effort.  I also used the japanese masking tape around the clear plastic cups to dress them up a bit.

(the big accordion flowers are made from wrapping paper. the kind with grids on the back make it so easy to fold!)

For favors I gave out candy bags with some of my favorite childhood candy -candy cigarettes, pixie stix, cry baby gum, fire balls and tootsie pops.

I wanted some kind of entertainment so everyone wouldn't just stand around and talk.  I love karaoke so we hired a dj come that brought his karaoke equipment.  I wish I had gotten him to start a little later because by the time everyone loosened up it seemed like it was time for him to go.  When I booked him I was worried about noise ordinances, but since we had to sing inside that wouldn't have mattered.  boo.

Regardless the karaoke was so fun and I think that everyone else enjoyed it.

Some of the songs I can remember that were sung were Crazy, Dilemma, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, Call Me Maybe, Friends In Low Places, Thank God I'm A Country Boy (performed perfectly by Eric!), Sweet Home Alabama, Santeria, Whatcha' Say, Strokin' & Lets Get It On were hysterically performed by Eric & Joe.  Ghetto Cowboy was highly requested by dj didn't have it :(
Dang I've got to make a cd with all these cool jams.

My friend Lindsay made my birthday cake, LL Cool Cakes for anyone local needing a sweet treat.  I knew the first time I saw the cover of BHG May 2012 I knew I had to have that pink lemonade cake.  My Nana always made me a lemonade pie for my birthday so it was perfect.  The cake was beautiful and tasted amazing!  Wish Bear, Bedtime Bear and Good Luck Bear adorned the top.

I didn't get a photo of the food but we had pulled pork and chicken sliders with cute little flagged toothpicks to match the accordion flowers.  I made Alabama White Sauce for the chicken and Sweet-and-Tangy Tomato BBQ sauce for the pork.  We also had pasta salad, Grandma Gwen's Beans, and Chipotle-Cilantro Slaw.  For the "girls" drink I mixed lemonade with Blueberry flavored Vodka.  So simple and good.

I am so thankful for those sweet friends that came to my party.  It was a tight squeeze but hopefully worth getting a babysitter?  Semi organized chaos at best.  We were still moving furniture and food around at party time so I still had on my work clothes when people arrived.  I didn't get to wear the right jewelry or paint my nails like I had hoped but at least I liked my dress.  Also thank you to my sister Angie and brother-in-law Joe for all your help!  And Eric too, you are so cool xo.

Several weeks ago I saw this photo on Pinterest and knew I had most pieces to this outfit. Top knot-check, pearls-check, gingham shirt-check, similar skirt-check,
nude shoes-check

being cool without trying-uncheck
Since it is summer I decided to go with my short sleeve gingham button up.  I wore nude flats for the photo but really I am wearing nude wedge sandals today and I HAD to add a belt!

In other clothing related news, yesterday I bought a pair of shorts!  Now if you know me you know that I don't wear shorts, I will wear athletic shorts but regular shorts-no.  The rest of the time I wear dresses.
I have issues with the top of my legs, I feel like they look like sausages in casing and usually the way shorts fall I just feel uncomfortable with all the attention to my thighs. Longer shorts look like culottes on me, ha culottes.
Yesterday we made one of our usual after church stops at Academy.  Do you have an Academy?  It is one of our favorite stores and for some reason I never feel bad about spending money there.  Oh you want those golf clubs? Ok just get them we are in Academy you know.
Anyway Eric was off getting some spinner bait line (?) and I was occupying myself in the running skirt section when I decided to look at some real shorts.  I found a cute ikat pair and a chambray pair, then I got brave and tried them on.  Of course I had on some high heels so it made my legs not as jiggly but I even felt comfortable in flats.  I wore them grocery shopping yesterday and I think I am sold.  I may even go back for that chambray pair.

Have a great week,
Sausage Legs

Basil Tenderloin

Usually when we have pork tenderloin I always use this recipe but this week I wanted to change it up a bit.   I had a clipped a Pork recipe for Grilled Pork Chops with Basil-Garlic Rub from a magazine (I think it was Southern Living, it is their type of paper) and was just waiting for some fresh basil to grow in.  Since we had a ton of fresh yummy basil and a pork tenderloin in the freezer Monday night was the night when fresh basil and tenderloin collided.

Grilled Pork Tenderloin with Basil-Garlic Rub

4 pork bone-in rib chops, 3/4 thick.  (I used tenderloin)
2 garlic cloves, peeled
1 cup fresh basil leaves, packed
2 tbsp. fresh lemon juice
2 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil
1 tsp. salt (next time I am cutting this back to 1/2 tsp., it was too salty for me)
1/2 tsp. freshly ground black pepper

Mince garlic and basil.  Add lemon juice, oil, salt and pepper to garlic and basil.  Stir until well blended into  a wet rub.  Spread on both sides of meat.  Let stand for 15-30 minutes.  (I let mine marinate for 4 hours since the meat was thicker than chops)

Prepare medium-hot fire in grill.  Grill chops over direct heat, turning once, to medium-rare doneness, 5-6 minutes per side, or until internal temp reaches 145*F, followed by a 3 minute rest.
(For the tenderloin we grilled wrapped in foil then for the last part of cooking took the meat out of the foil and directly on grill until done.)

30th Birthday

I'm back and 30.  Eric and I decided to meet my parents for the weekend at their lake cabin since we didn't get to go over Memorial weekend like we usually do.
Friday I received my first gift.  There is an older man that comes into my work and he will talk to me for hours.  Actually there are 3 men that will do that.  I've started hiding out in the bathroom when I see them drive up.  Anyway Friday he found out my birthday was the next day so before I left work he brought me a gift.  I had no clue what it really is or does but today I found some batteries and put them in and it plays "It's A Small World" and lights up.  He also invited me to spend next week with him in Branson, MO.  I told Eric he better step up his game! ha.

Since Friday was National Donut Day we had to make a stop at Krispy Kreme on the way to the lake.  This is my last picture in my 20's.  Yep I had to pull out the tie dye shirt, May was a long month without it.

The water was so clear that we could see the fish swimming.  My dad and Eric chased a school of bass all weekend but couldn't get them to bite.

Look how cute this cabin is.  I wish I had my real camera so the picture was better but the tin roof, dark green paint and stained trim was perfect.

Look at Claire Belle swimming while Eric and my dad rebuild the deck.  I didn't even swim, it was pretty chilly all weekend.

One last stop on the way home, Peach Park!  Peach cheesecake ice cream for me and a fried peach pie for Eric.  Have you ever stopped there?  It is on our must do for every summer drive up I-65.  If you are ever on I-65 between Montgomery, AL and Birmingham stop at exit 205 in Clanton for Peach Park.

So far 30 hasn't been bad, last night I ran my fastest mile 8:19 so maybe I am improving with age ;)
I remember on my 27th b'day I was grouting the bathroom floor, not too fun.  My 28th year I felt like my face really started to age, again not too fun.  My 29th year I had to deal with infertility, again not too fun.  But I slowly decided to give up control of that as I can only control it so much and I found (still finding) a peace about the whole thing.  I decided to focus on things I can control and had a great year.  We also had a lot of fun traveling and went to the beach 4 times and took two dream trips to New York and Chicago.
Ok the birthday talk is almost over, I'm having a party this weekend and can't wait!
