Happy Birthday Brooks!

Today my nephew turns 7 years old, tear. I can't believe he is so old.
One of my favorite pictures

He just finished kindergarten and one of his assignments earlier in the year was to make a book about a family member. He chose my mom, his MeMe.

The book was about him and MeMe at the lake.

This picture is so awesome because Brooks was trying to use perspective when he was drawing it! On the left is my dad's red truck putting the boat in down the boat ramp that is to the left of the cabin. The cabin is that brown square and it is all brown in real life.

Brooks & MeMe are on the sea doo and they are wearing their life jackets. Behind them is the boat. Notice the lines to show that the boat and seadoo are on top of the water! He used blue green and a little brown for the lake water, just like it is in real life.

Who is always at the lake? My parents' Boston Terrier, Zeb. This is the best picture ever and everyone's favorite page.
How cute is that dog
Next is everyone else in our family that is at the lake. I love his attention to detail.
Eric & Sise (Sissy (me) love Eric's hair!
Poppy (my dad),
Nona (my grandmother we spell it Nana but actually he is spelling it the way it sounds) the picture looks just like her!

and MeMe
The next page is
GeGe ( Angie my sister )
Baron ( his brother )
Dadee ( Daddy )

the and!

Why do kids have grow up? And loose teeth and learn how to spell?
Brooks had a karate party and he got to cut the cake with a real sword
He also broke a piece of wood with his foot!
Take that Chuck E Cheese

And best of all he actually wanted his picture taken with me!

Another Sophie

As I mentioned last week I was busy trying to wrap up a sewing project. Well I actually finished it!

Once again I used the Sophie pattern. I have made the bubble and the pants several times so last week I made the top and pants for my niece.

A few weekends ago I went to Sweet Treasures and they had just about every Amy Butler Love fabric. It was like fabric heaven in there. I was able to restrain myself and only came home with these two fabrics!

I think it turned out really cute! I tried to do my smocking in the coral color then the green and neither really showed up so I used the purple color that outlined the paisley design and I think it turned out great.

I am the worlds laziest smocker so I just kept it simple and didn't smock the back. But the back was still pleated and when the bias neck band was sewn on it stayed gathered. Make sense?

If you are looking for a quick cute and easy summer pattern to try may I put my vote in for Maja's Heirlooms Sophie pattern. I think it would qualify as an advanced beginner pattern. The updated version of this pattern has some cute bloomers I would love to try. I would also like to make the top longer for a dress option and the pants shorter for a capri option.

If anyone is local Kids Kloset is doing a class with Maja herself on the Sophie Bubble. I'm not sure of the date. Even though I've made the bubble I am still thinking about taking the class because I never follow a pattern the way I should. I usually just make it up as I go. Anyone else want to sign up for the class?

Sorry I've been MIA lately. I've been spending all of my time working on high school reunion stuff and sewing an outfit for my niece.

But I did see this cute birdhouse and had to share. Almost too cute to put outside.

Speaking of birds and cute. This year we finally had some baby Blue Birds!! They were so cute and Eric was so excited and went to check on them every day. Well Sunday this is what he found instead

If you don't like snakes, don't scroll down!

This stupid thing. Eric looked in the birdhouse and saw a big black blob. He had to take the birdhouse apart to get the snake out, all 5 feet of him. He was upset all night thinking about the snake eating the birds so the next day he took the snake to work and cut him open and found our little birdies. We were hoping they had learned to fly before the snake got to them.

Ok last chance don't look if you hate snakes!

I HATE snakes. I've gotten better about them but if I had seen this one I would have probably peed in my pants, thrown up and passed out all at the same time. I think it is either time to move to a high rise loft or concrete in our whole back yard. Or our neighbors cut down their jungle yards.

Anyone have any good tips for keeping snakes out of your birdhouses or my yard for that matter? We are hoping the Blue Birds come back next spring and we are going to be ready to fight the snake!

Two of God's Greatest Creations

Peanut Butter & Chocolate

Last weekend I had to take dessert to dinner at a friend's house. So I chose chocolate cupcakes. I couldn't decide between Peanut Butter frosting or Ganache so what is a girl to do, make both!

The Barefoot Contessa's Peanut Butter Frosting and it was DIVINE. It was so creamy and smooth. I was trying to think of all of the things I could put the frosting on. But in the end after all of the cupcakes were iced I just ate the frosting by itself. It tasted just like peanut butter but it wasn't as thick so I didn't get choked while shoving it down my throat.

I love Ganache, it is my favorite form of chocolate. I've always wanted to frost a cake with ganache, but I've always been intimidated. But people ganache is so easy to make. I used this super simple Ganache recipe. And just like them I dunked the cupcakes then let the ganache cool and piped it on top of the cupcake. It was super rich which is the way I like it.

I knew I would be using some pretty rich icing, so I used Pioneer Woman's chocolate sheet cake for the cupcakes. It made about 25 1/2 cupcakes. (That is why the one pictured is so squatty it is the 1/2 of the 25!) I've made the cake in cake form and loved it and it was just as good in cupcake form.

So the moral of the story is no more store bought icing. I use to be intimidated but now that I know how easy DIY icing is, I'll never go back.
I've used the Buttercream recipe on the back of the confectioners sugar box and it is delicious and so easy. Put some in a piping bag and the cupcakes look great. Much easier than using the tub and having to spread the icing and the are beautiful
For something different, peanut butter and ganache icing recipes are so easy and pretty you can't resist.

Make some tonight and report back tomorrow.

My Table on Knock Off Wood

Last week I received an email from Ana at Knock Off Wood asking my permission to use photos of my dining room table because she was wanting to make a pattern of it to share with the world!

If you don't know what Knock Off Wood is you are missing out. It is a blog/website composed off knock off plans written by stay at home mom Ana. She is pretty much a genius! The best part is people submit their pictures and tips of the finished furniture so it makes it so much easier to build that perfect piece of furniture!

She has all of her plans categorized by price as well as skill level. Click her for her Plan Catalog

My favorite plans are

Michaelas Kitchen Island

Planked Headboard

Farmhouse Bed Canopy

Small Desktop - Modular Office Collection

Farmhouse Style Open Vanity - use with these sinks

Rustic Bench

Storage Bed - Daybed

See how she built my table here

It is a little different from the way my Dad built it.

Ana designed the table using a table frame for the support. My dad didn't do that. He just used the apron ends and another board for the support.

She used a stretcher going across the middle to keep the legs from moving. He used this diagonal board instead of the stretcher. He used the apron board to drill all of the holes so I wouldn't have exposed nails, but that may be cool on an outside table.

The smaller support is better than a stretcher in my situation because of my limited amount of space I need my chairs to slide in as far as they can. But I do like the look of a stretcher especially used with bench seating.

I'm not sure if you can really see it but he used a little wood peg on the "X" for support to cover up the screw hole.

I forgot to measure the table but it was built to fit into this room. I would have loved a bit more overhang but it just wasn't feasible. We can seat 4 people comfortably which was the goal and have had 2 sit at either end on several occasions and everyone got along just fine. No elbows in the food.

I've been asked about the table's stain color. After I sanded and used wood conditioner, I applied 2 coats of Minwax Special Walnut #224. It was leftover from our kitchen counter tops but it darker on the table. I still haven't gotten around to sealing the table yet or now as everyone can see the bottom of the table. But when I do seal it I am going to use satin wipe on poly.

EDIT: 4/2011 My table was featured in Better Homes & Gardens May 2011 Issue!

Do you like for your house to smell clean?

Yeah me too.

ok Lets be friends.

I love this Citron Ginger countertop spray from Caldrea that Target now sells. It smells so fresh and clean that I could drink the stuff.

If someone wants to buy me a $5.99 birthday present then may I suggest the Caldrea Citron Ginger hand lotion. Located at my local Target on the end aisles (facing the pet stuff) near the kitchen section.

In case you need to know my b'day is in 20 days.

And speaking of birthdays I want to wish my homegirl Claire Belle a happy 6th birthday!!!

Here is to many more licks on the face to gross me out.

And for her special surprise we are taking her swimming today!!

Yes she has her very own life jacket. Homegirl loves to swim so when we are at the lake she wears it all the time. We look up and she is on the other side of the lake!

Supper Club Picnic

Last month I was at work on a beautiful day looking out our huge windows thinking about all of the awesome things going on in the great little circle of Supper Club friends I have. New babies, new husbands, new houses, sold houses... I decided we all needed to get together and celebrate.

So Sunday night we got together for a family picnic/surprise baby shower/happy 1st mother's day/fun time.

One of the great things about living in a college town is all of the wonderful green space. To keep from making more work on someone by having it at their house we decided to have the picnic at the AU library. And because I am a genius awesome planner it is finals week so it was packed with students.

But as predicted as soon as the 26 old people and 9 kids arrived the students left!

Hannah busted out this awesome acid wash jacket, BUT it was all she had in the mini van

I told Parker to make a funny face and this is what I got!

AU Library lawn is a great place to get together with kids they can run all they want

Mandy with part of her surprise baby shower for Hunter

The girls living the life eating goldfish off a blanket

For some reason I love this picture. It just shows how far we have come. 9 kids and one on the way! We've grown so fast!

And we were the lame old people having a picnic at our alma mater. It is pretty funny to think about it now. The students probably thought we were so lame with husbands and kids, but if their life turns out half as good as ours in a few years, I think they will have made it.
I say we bring pizza next month!

Birdie, Olive or Pepper's Room Part Deux

Remember a couple of weeks ago when I made up a room plan for my imaginary daughter? No, click here.

Well Friday while at the thrift store I noticed they had everything I needed to finish out the room!

They had this set of twin beds for only $15.99 each. Which would be perfect because word is I have friends that are considering the names Olive and Pepper so it looks like little Birdie would have an extra bed for her friends Olive and Pepper to stay in.

Take a paint brush to these babies and they would be perfect.

This chair would be perfect for a little reading spot. The funky green fabric was in perfect condition so I would leave it as it.
And this little side table tray would be great for the small space.

Eric has been in Texas since Thursday so he will be glad to know I have practiced self control and not purchased any of these items when he returns home today. Which is pretty shocking I love to buy furniture for future uses. But my sister's house is for sale along with her garage so I must restrain myself..
